Update Your U.S. Passport
You can update your passport name by submitting Form DS-82 (renewal by mail) or DS-11 (in person) with your certified court order and current passport. The State Department charges for a passport book renewal.
How it works
Passport gender marker policy changed significantly after Executive Order 14168 in January 2025. As of August 2026, the X marker is suspended and marker changes are severely restricted. Verify current policy at travel.state.gov before applying. If you have concerns about safety or timing, consult with an LGBTQ+ legal organization before submitting your passport.
