Name Change Roadmap · Step l of 5

Update Your Driver License or State ID

After SSA, visit your states DMV (or equivalent agency) to update your license or state ID. Most DMVs verify your name against SSA records, so wait 24 to 48 hours after your SSA update before visiting.

How it works

Bring your current license or ID, your certified court order, and payment for the replacement fee (typically to ). Some states allow you to also change your gender marker at the same visit using a self-attestation form or letter from a healthcare provider.

Policy alert: Gender marker options vary significantly by state. As of 2026, about 20 states offer M, F, and X markers with self-attestation or minimal documentation. Several states (including Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Tennessee, and Texas) do not permit gender-identity changes on licenses. Check your states DMV website for current policy.
